Eudaimonia – a good spirit. In ancient Greece it meant happiness and well being. At the time people thought there's nothing higher to be desired in life. They also believed in guardian spirits, that meant them well, and evil spirits, that led them into misfortune. This is what this double spread marginalia illustration is about.
The illustration on the next page is related to music and dance, which were an important part of greek culture and were bringing joy and happiness to people. The figures were inspired by some of the sculptures and vase paintings of ancient Greece.
